The Education Secretary, Dr Danlami Hayyo has commended the Home Economics Teachers Association of Nigeria ( HETAN) for the Association steadfastness and dedication to advancing Home Economics Education over the past five decades highlighting the critical role the subject plays in shaping the fabric of our society which goes beyond management of household but about equiping individuals especially the young people with essential skills needed to lead healthy,productive and balanced lives.
The commendation came during the Association’s annual National conference and 50th Anniversary celebration.
Dr Hayyo who was represented by Malam Rilwan Mudi, Deputy Director at the Department of Quality Assurance said the subject has remained relevant,dynamic and responsive to the changing needs of the society.
He commended the Association leadership in FCT for being a beacon of excellence and providing advocacy in the promotion of Home economics at all levels of education.
The Education Secretary urged the Association to prepare students to navigate this era of the technological advancement, globalization and complex social challenges by equiping them with knowledge and competencies needed to thrive in a modern,interconnected world
He assures the Association of the FCT Education Secretariat commitment to supporting home economics education,recognizing the value of the subject and the impact on families and society.
Earlier,in her welcome address, the FCT Chapter President , Home Economics Teachers Association of Nigeria (HETAN),Mrs Rifkatu Lami Yisa advocated for sustained inclusion of home economics as a mandatory subject for Educational entrance across the country.
She explained that the subject is a foundational discipline that prepared students to manage their personal and family lives effectively thereby contributing to socio – economic development of the country.
She added that Home Economics foster entrepreneurship,urging the Education Authorities to recognize the importance of sustaining it within the curriculum as prerequisite for educational advancement.
The FCT Chapter President assured that the Association remain committed to advocating for policies that support the growth and development of the Home Economics Education in Nigeria.
She expressed the Association appreciation to the FCT Education Secretariat for their efforts to make sure the subject remain relevant .
Others who spoke commended the Association for its various achievements over the past five decades and to chart a course for the future .
The colourful program which was well attended brought together educators ,policy makers and stakeholders with the theme as Home Economics: Panacea to Family and Society Viability.amidst Economic Downturn’ .it also featured recognition and awards presentation to the individuals for their outstanding contributions to the success of the Association from inception.
