In a significant development for Nigerian workers, the National Assembly is poised to receive an executive bill on Tuesday outlining a new national minimum wage. This move comes in the wake of a landmark agreement between President Bola Tinubu and key labour leaders, who have settled on a new minimum wage of Seventy Thousand Naira.
During a crucial meeting at the Aso Presidential Villa in Abuja, President Tinubu, alongside the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo, reached a consensus on the increased remuneration. This new wage will replace the previous minimum wage of Thirty Thousand Naira, which expired on April 18, 2024.
To formalize this agreement and pave the way for its implementation, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, confirmed that lawmakers would be presented with the executive bill detailing the new minimum wage by Tuesday. This legislative step is expected to ensure the agreement gains legal standing, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of improved worker compensation in Nigeria.
