PDP Governors Applaud Supreme Court Verdict on Local Government Autonomy

Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) banner have expressed strong support for the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on local government autonomy.

On July 11, the Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional for state governors to withhold funds designated for local government administrations. The court also prohibited governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils, stating that such actions violate the 1999 Constitution.

A week after this landmark judgment, the PDP governors have officially endorsed the decision.

However, they urged caution in implementing the ruling to ensure a smooth transition.

This stance was articulated following the PDP Governors Forum’s meeting held yesterday at the Enugu State Government House in Enugu.
