The recent Supreme Court verdict granting fiscal autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local government areas has sparked a wave of reactions, with stakeholders proposing various measures to ensure the effective implementation of the ruling.
While some express concerns that local government chairmen may struggle with this newfound autonomy, others worry that state governors might retain control indirectly. Despite these fears, Muazu Maifata, President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), believes the judgement will significantly boost rural development.
In an interview, Maifata voiced his optimism about the Supreme Court decision and called for an increase in the monthly allocations to local government councils. He emphasized that the judgement secures the future of local governments, noting that many Nigerians and state governors have welcomed the ruling.
Maifata also urged local government administrations to uphold accountability and reciprocate the Supreme Court’s decision and the president’s support by ensuring transparent governance at the local level.
